DETHRONEMENT: THE UNCONSCIOUS BRAIN BEHIND THE I

If the conscious mind—the part you consider you—is just the tip of the iceberg in the brain, what is all the rest doing? The answer: all the things that really constitute you. Renowned brain scientist David Eagleman plumbs the depths of the subconscious brain with humuor and awe. Why can your foot move to the brake pedal before you are consciously aware of a car pulling out? What do Odysseus and Christmas accounts have in common? How many yous exist inside of you, and what does that mean for the concept of your “true colours”? How is your brain like a conflicted democracy that sometimes enters civil war?

Eagleman’s subsurface exploration highlights how our unified perception of the outside world is a construction of the brain, fragile and changeable. Way stops include Mel Gibson’s arrest, monogamy, plane spotters, how neuroscientists win at tennis, why people whose name begins with J are more likely to marry other people whose name begins with J, and why strippers make more money at certain times of month, even while no one is consciously aware of their fertility level. These stories serve as a lattice for lessons from strokes and brain trauma, drugs and hormones, behaviour and perception. The final understanding is that the conscious mind rests on top of millions of years of experience that is written in vast, inaccessible circuitry. Although we typically take credit for our thoughts and insights, the real credit may belong to the deep evolutionary algorithms upon which we float. By shining a light below the surface of awareness and illuminating the rich, multifaceted nature of our minds, Eagleman shows how modern brain science exposes a richer view of ourselves.

Chinese Summary/
