THE OTHER HAND (US TITLE: LITTLE BEE)

Book ID/图书代码: 11701208B25474

English Summary/英文概要: We don’t want to tell you too much about this book. It is a truly special story and we don’t want to spoil it. Nevertheless, you need to know something, so we will just say this:

It is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific.

The story starts there, but the book doesn’t.

And it’s what happens afterwards that is most important.

Once you have read it, you’ll want to tell everyone about it. When you do, please don’t tell them what happens either. The magic is in how it unfolds.

She has nowhere else to run. You have nowhere left to hide.

This is the story of Little Bee, a Nigerian girl who has fled to the UK after her village was burned to the ground and her family murdered. When she is released into the British countryside after two years in a detention centre she seeks out Sarah and Andrew, the couple that saved her life back in Nigeria. Narrated alternately by Little Bee and Sarah, this is an absolute triumph. Cleave’s writing talents are prodigious and he keeps getting better - his books are passionate, hilarious, intelligent, topical and hugely readable.

Below is the foreword from the editor of the UK Edition:
Dear Reader,
You don’t know me. I’m Chris Cleave’s editor, and I’m writing to tell you how extraordinary The Other Hand is. As publishers, naturally we only publish books we love, but every now and then something comes along that is so special it gives us goosebumps. This is one of those books ± just as David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and Thomas Keneally’s Schindler’s Ark were. These had a massive impact on readers worldwide, and I am very proud that The Other Hand now sits beside them on the Sceptre list. It’s an amazing novel ± horrifying but hilarious, tragic but uplifting, hugely entertaining and highly intelligent. I hope you love this book as much as I do.
Yours sincerely,
Suzie DooreÂ
Senior Editor

Suzie Doore, Chris Cleave’s editor and Senior Editor at Hodder, says that it is selling over 5,000 copies a week and "demand is outstripping supply!" She says that; "We’ve got other publishers calling us asking how we did it because the book’s bucking the sales trend for literary fiction".
