ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS: GAME THEORY IN EVERYDAY LIFE
Book ID/图书代码: 12751008B25506
English Summary/英文概要: Praised by Entertainment Weekly as the man who put the fizz into physics, Dr. Len Fisher turns his attention to the science of cooperation in his lively and thought-provoking book. Fisher shows how the modern science of game theory has helped biologists to understand the evolution of cooperation in nature, and investigates how we might apply those lessons to our own society. In a series of experiments that take him from the polite confines of an English dinner party to crowded supermarkets, congested Indian roads, and the wilds of outback Australia, not to mention baseball strategies and the intricacies of quantum mechanics, Fisher sheds light on the problem of global cooperation. The outcomes are sometimes hilarious, sometimes alarming, but always revealing. A witty romp through a serious science, Rock, Paper, Scissors will both teach and delight anyone interested in what it what it takes to get people to work together.
(CL)
Awards/获奖情况:“Why be nice? In answering this simple question, Len Fisher takes us on a wry, fascinating tour of one of the most momentous sciences of our time. You couldn’t ask for a better guide to the games we all play.”---William Poundstone - Author of Gaming the Vote and Fortune’s Formula(如何移動富士山/ 威廉. 龐士東William Poundstone) “Physicist and Ig Nobel Prize–winner Fisher explores how game theory illuminates social behavior in this lively study…. Fisher does succeed in making the complex nature of game theory accessible and relevant, showing how mathematics applies to the dilemmas we face on a daily basis.”---Publishers Weekly
“Through a combination of real-world examples…and philosophical problems, Fisher shows us that we’re more cooperative than we sometimes think we are, while at the same time startlingly more selfish than we out to be…the writing is lively, the scientific discourse clear and accessible, and the ideas challenging and exciting.”---Booklist
“Rock, Paper, Scissors is a refreshingly informal but insightful account of key ideas in game theory. Len Fisher gives many examples, several from his own life, of games that pose harrowing choices for their players. He shows how game theory not only illuminates the consequences of these choices but also may help the players extricate themselves from situations likely to cause anger or grief.”---Steven J. Brams - Dept. of Politics, New York University
“Rock, Paper, Scissors brings the evolution of cooperation to everyone with a succinct summary of how these exciting ideas change the way we look at the world and the way we think.”--- John R. Hauser -Kirin Professor of Marketing, MIT Sloan School of Management
