Following a strange snowballing of even stranger events, he finds himself, at last, exactly not where he ever imagined he would be, up a tree at night in the park with a hedgehog.
Benton is the type of guy who seems to land in trouble without too much effort and get out of it just as easily.
Like the time his girlfriend came home while he was in bed with one of his English language students. He quickly slips a bag over his girlfriend’s head and convinces her it is a burglary.
He’s not a very likeable character. Yet, there is something about this hapless male that is appealing, even though he has such low moral fibre as to have sex with a woman he met in a bar just two days after his fiancee dies when she tries to climb in her window, falls, breaks her neck and freezes to death on the lawn
Smith’s writing style is sharp and urbane with a lot of comical twists. Even though a lot of the comedy here revolves around sex and bodily functions, Smith manages to avoid being overly crude.
