This is the prequel story to that film which focuses on the disappearance of one boy, Walter Collins, and his mother, Christine. But the story of Sanford Clark is far more compelling. He was the only survivor of serial murderer Gordon Northcott, a thirteen year-old boy forced to help dispose of Northcott’s victims.
Sanford was sent from his home in Saskatoon, Canada to live with his Uncle Gordon Stewart Northcott on a chicken ranch in Wineville, California, where he soon discovered that Northcott was a rapist and murderer. During the two years that Sanford was forced to remain at the ranch, he witnessed at least twenty young boys murdered at the hands of his uncle. He was also forced (with a gun to his head) to dismember and dispose of the victim’s bodies according to Northcott’s instructions.
Jessie Clark, Sanford’s older sister, knew her younger brother well, and she became suspicious of the letters that he was forced to send home that assured the family that he was well. Taking it upon herself, she traveled to the ranch, and once she found out what was happening there, was nearly killed herself before she was able to help free her brother. Ultimately Sanford was rescued from the ranch and held in protective custody while he shared the intimate details of two years of carnage while in captivity and identifying many of the missing boys from photographs. It was his cooperation that ultimately put an end to Northcott and his murders.
After the highly publicized trial, where Sanford Clark was the chief witness for the prosecution, Gordon Northcott was found guilty and hanged. Young Sanford Clark was eventually exonerated of responsibility for his forced role in the crimes, due to what would later come to be known as the Stockholm Syndrome.
This true crime evolved into a family love story once Sanford returned to his hometown where he spent the rest of his long life as a loving and beloved local figure-- in spite of the public’s knowledge and his lasting physical and mental trauma. His wife of many years, June, joined his sister Jessie in standing by his side through his debilitating depressions and fits of suicidal guilt. With their help, he later adopted two young sons who grew up loved and respected in his home, while he spent a successful career with the Canadian Postal Service after serving honorably in World War II.
To this day, Sanford’s son Jerry (collaborator on this book) reveals that he never heard his father say an unkind word about anybody. Sanford Clark, instead of allowing himself to be twisted into evil, used his long nightmare to become a gentle and tolerant man, in spite of his lifelong struggle to claim victory over those horrifying years.
