THEIR FINEST HOUR AND A HALF

Book ID/图书代码: 01200008B26068

English Summary/英文概要: It’s 1940, France has fallen, and only a narrow strip of sea lies between Great Britain and invasion. The country is in peril. What’s needed (obviously) is a morale-boosting, heart-warming war film, preferably one that will appeal to the American market.

As bombs start to fall on London, work begins on ’Just an Ordinary Wednesday’, an almost-true tale of bravery and rescue at Dunkirk. And since call-up has stripped the film industry of the brightest and best, it’s the callow, the jaded and the utterly unsuitable who are making up the numbers.

There’s Catrin Cole, junior copy-writer turned romantic dialogue specialist; Ambrose Hilliard, third most popular British film star of 1924, currently available for all leading roles; Edith Beadmore, ex-seamstress at Madame Tussaud’s and ex-Londoner, having been bombed twice in two months; and Arthur Frith, whose peacetime job as a catering manager hasn’t prepared him for his sudden, unexpected elevation to Special Military Advisor.

And in a serious world, in a nation under siege, in a city visited nightly by destruction, they must work together to produce a slice of the purest entertainment . . .

Chinese Summary/

(Sandy)

Awards/获奖情况:Longlisted for the Orange Prize

I want to let you know the good news that a film adaptation has been made of Lissa Evans’ wonderful novel, THEIR FINEST HOUR AND A HALF, which has been directed by Lone Scherfig.

My colleague Georgia Garrett, Lissa Evans’ primary agent here, went with Lissa Evans to see an early cut of the film last Wednesday. She tells me that; “It was really good. Bill Nighy (Ambrose), Eddie Marsan (Sammy), Helen McCrory (Sophie) are a total joy. Gemma Arterton great as Catrin and she and Sam Claflin (Buckley) make a surprisingly affecting couple. I cried for the last 20 mins. It looks beautiful too. Just thought you’d like to know. They are planning to show it at Toronto Film Festival in the autumn.”

Praise for THEIR FINEST HOUR AND A HALF:

"[Lissa Evans] displays a fine eye for detail and for the absurdities involved in filming. She also brilliantly evokes the disruption and dangers of wartime London. This funny, heart-warming and beautifully crafted novel is a must-read" Daily Mail

"Beautifully written, minutely observed and researched, evocative and very funny tale" Michele Hanson, Guardian

"Comic, poignant and altogether delightful, raised spirits are guaranteed" Easy Living

"This is a comic novel, but far warmer in tone and broader in scope than that label would suggest...Gloriously observed...Hilliard is a wonderful creation - and Evans’s recreated propaganda scripts are a total joy. Delicious" The Times
