English Summary/英文概要： To western eyes the Middle East is a troubled region of dictators and extremists. Arabs, on the other hand, often lay the blame on centuries of western interference. For many, both in the east and west, the root problem is a lack of freedom. But can simply toppling autocratic regimes and holding free elections solve this? By the same token intervention by western governments brings limited benefits and easily becomes counter-productive.
Looking beyond the turmoil reported on our TV screens, the Guardian’s veteran Middle East correspondent Brian Whitaker examines the ‘freedom deficit’ that affects Arabs in their daily lives: their struggles against corruption, discrimination and bureaucracy, and the stifling authoritarianism that pervades homes, schools and mosques and even presidential palaces.
Drawing on a wealth of new research and wide-ranging interviews, Whitaker argues that the solution lies mainly in the hands of Arabs themselves. In order to achieve peace, prosperity and full participation in today’s global economy, Arabs must overcome their own history and embrace not only political change but far-reaching social and cultural change as well.
