Mary Talbot Cross grew up in the United Kingdom and took a degree in French language and literature at Aberdeen University in Scotland. She arrived in Australia in 1991 and began researvhing and writing about Australian history under her given name, Jennifer M.T. Carter.
She lives in Burra, South Australia.
