THE CURSE OF THE LABRADOR DUCK: MY OBSESSIVE QUEST TO THE EDGE OF EXTINCTION
The Labrador Duck, extinct for more than 100 years, once roamed North America, but little is known about this striking black-and-white bird. Often mentioned in the same breath as the Passenger Pigeon, Dodo and Great Auk, stuffed specimens housed in glass and plastic in museums and private collections around the world, are rare—only 55 are known to exist. Even more rare is the kind of scientist who would travel the world over more than three times in search for every last authentic stuffed bird. That rare specimen is Dr. Glen Chilton, a biologist with a self-professed obsessive personality. His pursuit of the rare, extinct species brought him into encounters with a Scottish hermit, Russian gangsters and a jailed sheik. Chilton travelled to the duck’s known habitat on Canada’s east coast, but also to museums and personal collections (and on many adventures) in Germany, Russia, Scotland, Montreal, the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Prague, Vienna, and across the United States and the Middle East. Over the course of his epic journey, Chilton encountered a colourful array of collectors, scientists, journalists, and others, and earned numerous hangovers, swam naked in a glacier-fed stream, and narrowly avoid arrest in New York City.
The Curse of the Labrador Duck is truly a story of obsession, a quest unlike any other, a near-impulsive journey around the planet in pursuit of a bird no one has seen alive since the nineteenth century.
Chinese Summary/
