At the same time, Le Dilettante is republishing Ceux qui n’en mènent pas large, first released in 1986, with a beautiful cover by Tardi. It’s the story of a failed actor, Georges Maman, a man at the end of his tether who ends up in porn movies and agrees to have dinner with Dagonard, a tedious dud who makes lousy TV films. It smacks of experience and distress, with a quote by David Goodis “After a while, it gets so bad you want to stop the whole business.” Shorter, more compact, Ceux qui n’en mènent pas large is a cruel tale full of self-mockery. Jean-Pierre Martinet offers a mix of harsh irony and fierce descriptions. As we observe the two losers with their bottles of cheap wine emptied one after the other and their tin of dog food, we can’t decide whether to cry, snigger or feel alarmed at such a debacle. Martinet’s heroes are, before their time, homeless underdogs, guys who won’t go much further and know they have become completely marginalised for there is no room in society for such outcasts.
