評分標準以日常生活用碳量、生活滿意度和平均壽命等3項來對各區域和國家評比。其中2006年全球178個國家和地區進行評價“幸福指數”的高低。(台灣排名第96；大陸第31；香港88；日本95。第一名是太平洋島國萬那杜，最後一名是辛巴威)。2009年再次公佈排行，但這次只有143個國家和地區評比 (沒有台灣，原因是把人口密度相對較少的區域排除此評價範圍)，這一次143個國家評價佔全球總人口的99%。(哥斯大黎加第一；大陸20；香港84；日本77；美國114)。
新經濟基金會最主要的評比目的，說明了人類與自然環境的關係。統計結果說明有錢不等於幸福，工業化發展程度高的國家不等於幸福，商業化密度高的國家不等於幸福，因為這些國家往往破壞地球環境。真正幸福的要素是掌握在我們全體與自然環境的相處。他們表示，地球從2007年開始進入生態透支，顯示人類所有消費都在持續咨意花費地球資源，全球生態環境正進入紅色警戒。新經濟基金會的調查，如果全世界都像美國的消費習慣，必須要5.3個地球才能負荷花費的資源。
追求生活快樂，但人類與環境是必須和平共處的，透過這本書我們可以了解，新經濟基金會對於世界的未來遠景。(Chris)

About the Author/作者介绍： David Boyle is a fellow at the New Economics Foundation (nef). His previous works include The Tyranny of Numbers, Authenticity, The Little Money Box, The Money Changers, Blondel’s Song and The Sum of Our Discontent.
Andrew Simms is policy director at nef and a commentator on issues like climate change and ’clone town Britain’. He is the author of Tescopoly, Why Good Llves Needn’t Cost the Earth and Ecological Debt.
