PARISIANS: AN ADVENTURE HISTORY OF PARIS

No-one knows a city like the people who live there -- so who better to relate the history of Paris than its inhabitants through the ages? Taking us from 1700 to the new millennium, Graham Robb’s Parisians introduces us to spies, soldiers and emperors; adulterers, murderers, wives, mistresses and widows; to town-planners, prisoners and prostitutes. We meet police commissioners and novelists; photographers, philosophers and playwrights; we see, too, scientists and alchemists; factory girls with hands stained green by arsenic, and miners who wear garlands of crushed garlic and campion around their necks to protect them from poisonous gases. We visit underground caverns and catacombs; encounter political and sexual intrigues; witness real and would-be revolutions, assassination attempts and several all too successful executions. We are there for the opening of the Metro; we lose our way (but keep our heads) with Marie-Antoinette, learn that Emile Zola was terrified of lightning, and discover the true origins of Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte-Cristo; we watch from the sidelines as Hitler visits the French capital and, finally, experience what life is like for some of the city’s modern-day ’visitors’ -- the immigrants who’ve made their home on the outskirts of Paris.

Praise for the previous title, THE DISCOVERY OF FRANCE: “Few foreigners have immersed themselves in France as deeply as Graham Robb. The author of acclaimed biographies of Balzac, Hugo, and Rimbaud, this former Oxford academic has spent most of his professional life studying French literature and history. Yet Robb was conscious that his conception of France was almost entirely derived from a tiny circle of Parisian intellectuals who most of their compatriots would regard as aliens. Frustrated by his ignorance, Robb literally got on his bike and set out on a quest to discover the France of yesteryear… Robb’s book is scattered with such vivid gems… The reader is left hoping that Robb will hop back on his bike to explain how this rediscovered France evolved into the country it is today.”---The Financial Times

“Robb’s concise and fast-paced writing pedals along with never a dull paragraph, as facts, events, characters and quotations flash by… Robb, from his two-wheeled vantage point, has made a dazzling and moving contribution to a long tradition.”---The Times

“This splendid book – at once history, psychogeography, itinerary and cabinet of curiosities – owes much of its detail and charm to Robb’s own meticulous discovery of France.”---The Telegraph
