Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.

Daniel Radcliffe to star in
The Woman in Black
It has been confirmed that Daniel Radcliffe will play the lead role in the forthcoming Hammer Films adaptation of The Woman in Black. Based on the bestselling novel by Susan Hill, filming is expected to begin as early as this autumn. Radcliffe will play Arthur Kipps, the young solicitor who travels to the decrepit Eel Marsh House to sort through the deceased owner’s estate. He uncovers some sinister secrets among the piles of paperwork, and whilst spending the night there encounters the terrifying figure of a woman dressed entirely in black.
The script is being written by the talented Jane Goldman, whose previous credits include this year’s international hit Kick-Ass and Stardust (2007). James Watkins (Eden Lake) will direct.
The Woman in Black will be Radcliffe’s first film role post-Harry Potter.
Release is planned for 2011.
