為保護他的身份，作者使用筆名REZA KAHLILI書寫本書。
作者出生於德黑蘭，在加州大學畢業後，返回伊朗，並在國王穆罕默德禮薩巴列維的統治最後幾年中，加入了全國革命衛隊。
不久後，伊斯蘭共和國成立，因伊斯蘭共和國逮捕、拷打和處決他的好友等許多人等等行徑，令他對伊斯蘭共和國感到十分痛心。
他將他如何與美國情報機構取得聯繫、以及其後在全國革命衛隊中許多年的報告寫入書中。
位於這種道德上的兩難境地，他掙扎著…一邊在全國革命衛隊密探自己國家(伊斯蘭共和國)中的朋友，一邊擔憂著他的家人將因他的行徑遭待補；於是他選擇逃離自己的國家，並設法取得了進入美國的許可證。
