Book ID/图书代码: 14780009B30506
English Summary/英文概要: MARIE ANTOINETTE is one of the most fascinating and enduringly popular of all historical figures.
Claudette Laurent flees Paris after a devastating fire kills both her parents and destroys their doll shop. Arriving in London, she struggles to create her own dollmaking trade and discovers that English society is wild for the fashionable dolls her father had made popular in France, as is Queen Marie Antoinette, who becomes a surprising customer and friend. When the embattled Queen invites Claudette to sail to France she is ecstatic--not only for the honor, but in hopes of finding her childhood sweetheart Jean-Philippe who may or may not have survived the fire. She does indeed locate him, but he has changed. In the growing fanatacism and violence in France, he’s become an accomplice to Robespierre and an enemy of the Queen, so when money and jewels are discovered being smuggled in Claudette’s dolls destined for the Queen, Jean-Philippe arrests Claudette and sends her to the infamous La Force prison. Although it seems Claudette will share Marie Antoinette’s fate at the guillotine, she is saved from the madness by William Townshend, an English country gentleman and longtime admirer of Claudette’s. Together, they return to London to forge a new life in which Claudette is renowned as the country’s foremost master doll artisan.
