THE BOOK OF KEES: A BIBLIOPHILE’S JOURNEY INTO MID-LIFE

Book ID/图书代码: 00110909B30894

English Summary/英文概要: With The Book of Kees:A Bibliophile’s Journey into Mid-life, acclaimed poet and novelist, Tim Bowling takes the genre of creative non-fiction into exciting and surprising new territory. Stuck in a melancholic winter malaise, concerned for his children’s future in a world that seems increasingly intender and cold, the middle-aged family man and author seeks refuge from his worries in the stacks of his local university library. One day, while browsing in the American Literature section, he stumbles upon a unique and valuable Wallace Stevens book containing the prior ownership signature of Weldon Kees, one of the most eclectic, mysterious, and tragic American artists of the twentieth century.
So begins a sometimes frantic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking six-month journey into the rich world of books and book collecting, morality and immorality, and the challenges of raising three kids while becoming obsessed with a childless advent grade Renaissance man who disappeared in San Francisco in 1955 and was never heard from again. Torn by his desire to steal the book, and by an equal desire to live with integrity and decency for the sake of his family, Bowling hovers in uncertainty while exploring a wide range of subjects and themes, including the history of the book and book theft, suicide, American culture, fatherhood, the Golden Gate Bridge, F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Internet, and the midlife crisis. As winter turns to spring and spring to summer, and as he discovers more and more intriguing and unnerving connections between himself and Weldon Kees, Bowling begins to lose his grip on reality. Then the library book he plans to steal vanishes, and suddenly the stakes are raised even higher, leading to an unexpected and intensely moving conclusion on the anniversary of Weldon Kees’s disappearance.
