THE DAILY FIVE: FOSTERING LITERACY INDEPENDENCE IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES

Book ID/图书代码: 12353809B30999

English Summary/英文概要: Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you’ll want to meet “The Sisters”, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.

This book not only explains the philosophy behind the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components.

Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child.

The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

About the Author/作者介绍: Gail and her sister Joan (Moser) grew up in a small town and farming community with four other siblings.
"When we were little, our parents bought a piece of property that included an old, condemned girls’ academy. Having a huge, empty, four-story ’playhouse’ in our backyard, our days were filled with pretending and playing with our siblings. We each had our own room in this dilapidated building, many of which were classrooms complete with the warped blackboards of old. This imaginative play led to the magical type of ’teaching’ only a child could understand. It is no wonder three of our six siblings became teachers!"
"The Sisters," as they are known, continue their magical teaching today, consulting across the nation, and presenting at NCTE, IRA, and state reading conferences.
Gail is a literacy coach and Joan is a K-2 multi-age teacher.
Gail has three daughters and enjoys camping, reading, and working on their website. She and her sister are very close. "We love being together and are the very best of friends! When we are with each other, we are always at home."
