For Alfonso, the pressure mounts as the Vatican threatens to reclaim the rights to the duchy of Ferrara unless he can produce an heir. He grows to resent Lucrezia and begins to plot his revenge. Meanwhile, Lucrezia has become fascinated by the work of the artists who are creating frescoes for the Duke’s castle - and in particular by the supremely talented young painter Jacomo. As their relationship tips over into dangerous territory, the Duke is working out ways to solve his own problem once and for all.
Originally inspired by a Robert Browning poem, Gabrielle has meticulously researched real events. Lucrezia and Alfonso were married in 1559. Three years later, she disappeared from the records. What really happened to her is still a mystery.
