BERLIN-OUEST: HISTOIRE D’UNE ILE ALLEMANDE 1945-1989(WEST BERLIN: THE HISTORY OF A GERMAN ISLAND)

Twenty years after the fall of the Wall, a description of daily existence in Berlin that has begun to become a vague memory for many or, for the younger generations, a life they never knew.
Jacqueline Hénard, a Berliner born shortly before the construction of the Wall, gives us a view from inside the divided city. Sifting through a cardboard box of documents in the family attic, she reviews the assumptions, the legends, and the obsessions of West Berlin, including the «pleasure” of being occupied, the renaissance of Jewish life after 1945, and the mixture of exaltation and deception of the students helping East Berliners escape in 1961.
This well-documented narrative is richly marked throughout with anecdotes and describes the aberrations of a daily existence its imprisoned inhabitants eventually came to find normal.

(RY)
