of the urban phenomenon to the era of development of the Greco-Roman classical world. For each period, the author examines the splendor of the
cities, their importance, their evolution over time, their most noteworthy aspects and monuments, and the causes of their downfall. For example, you will see the relevance of Ur, the greatness of Babylon in Mesopotamia (with Hammurabi and
Nebuchadnezzar), and the peculiarities of Thebes in Egypt. You will also learn about Jerusalem, the Holy City and birthplace of the three great monotheist religions, and about Carthage. For the Asian and American regions, magnificent cities
like Pataliputra (ancient Patna) and Teotihuacan are discussed.
This book gives special attention to urban conflicts, the most important historical
figures, and the historical events in which these cities took part. With this information,
the author analyzes the transformations that these cities underwent to turn into urban centers with magnificent monuments and buildings.

Ángel Luis Vera has a PhD in geography from the University of Sevilla, where he also received his undergraduate degree in history and geography. Currently he works as a tenured high school professor teaching these subjects. He has been
the recipient of various public recognitions, including the First Prize of the Priego City Hall (1995) and the First Prize of the Seville City Hall for curricular projects (1998). Furthermore, he is the member of 8 associations, work groups, and research teams.
He has published numerous academic books and articles, including several dealing with the karst topography of the Subbetic mountain range in Cordoba and the urban evolution of Priego de Cordoba.
