CANNED!: HOW I LOST TEN JOBS IN TEN YEARS AND LEARNED TO LOVE UNEMPLOYMENT

Canned is about more than just work. Americans take their jobs very seriously – to a large degree, what we do for a living defines us. If we worship the dollar, the office is our church. What we expect of ourselves and others, what we’ll do and take to achieve our goals, how we interact with our bosses and subordinates and coworkers – this is where our values are visible, not the ones we may espouse but the ones we actually live by. If you accept that the office is the last common cultural space in American life, then it follows that it’s also the best place to observe the national character. More than just a “Dilbert” style collection of quirky office anecdotes, Canned also offers trenchant insights into human nature and what it takes to succeed (or fail) in the day-to-day grind.

On the other hand, lest this pitch become too serious, Canned is also a book about urinating off the top of a parking garage onto your supervisor as he takes a smoke break far below. It explores the question of how things got this way, who’s really screwing you over (the answer might surprise you), and even suggests that working less (or not working at all) could become the new American ideal. Entertaining but also insightful, this book is a memoir peppered with social commentary and journalistic asides. And with the economy at the beginning of an extended swoon and unemployment claims at an all-time high, it’s the perfect time for a book like Canned. That our economy was brittle and unstable, built on many fraudulent assumptions and sustained by a vampiric impulse toward dead-end exploitation came as no surprise to myself and millions of workers like me, who saw from the inside that things just weren’t right. Americans are entering a period of reflection and reassessment, an era of skepticism and even hostility towards big business, and likely have never been so receptive to a book like this ...

Based on a series of acclaimed cover stories for the Washington DC-based independent newsweekly, Washington City Paper, Canned is, above all, a proven success. Those stories (see enclosed) were among the most popular in the City Paper’s 28-year history, drawing letters and comments from around the world, for months following its publication. People either loved my writing or hated it (I was compared unironically to Jesus Christ and I also received death threats), but their response was always passionate. Taken as a whole, I think you’ll agree that Canned is a book whose time has come.

Chinese Summary/

(Chris)

Awards/

About the Author/作者介绍: Franklin Schneider has been a contributor at the Washington City Paper for several years, and has written about everything from honeybee Armageddon to street-racing arsonists. His features about being fired repeatedly (enclosed) were some of the most popular in the City Paper’s history. He studied writing at the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa. Also, he’s been fired ten times in ten years, which has to be some kind of record.
