English Summary/英文概要: Rosa has been there for as far back as Sidelnikow can remember. The headstrong spinster offers him refuge in her tiny room when his parents argue. She opens his eyes to the many wonders, big and small, in the world around him. When he falls in love at the end of his school career and discovers the world of passion with the adult Lora, he detaches himself from Rosa. However, the relationship brings disaster: Lora’s influential ex-lover is insanely jealous; he threatens to ruin Sidelnikow’s career prospects. When Lora realises this she ends their relationship abruptly and reluctantly. Sidelnikow is devastated. As if that were not enough, he then has to deal with Rosa’s sudden death. Dejected, he moves to a new town to study. His studies do not really interest him and he is lead astray by dubious acquaintances before Rosa suddenly puts her foot down. From then on she remains with him in his dreams – as enigmatic and headstrong as ever and incredibly lively for a dead person.

Awards/获奖情况:"It seems that there is an author who was born with penetrating insight, a keen sense of hearing, absolute discretion and, above all, a flair for frankness.” Literaturnaya Gazeta
"Sakhnovsky has clearly studied Nabokov, and probably Proust, too. But this has not made a second-rate imitator of him." Novy Mir
"With his novel “The Vital Needs of the Dead”, Russian author Igor Sakhnovsky has written a parable of trust in life itself, a story made convincing by its subtle, poetic and comical charm." RADIOEINS RBB
"Whereas some modern Slavic novels with their – apparently – typical Russian melancholy struggle to find a reading public, there is no such risk with “The Vital Needs of the Dead”. This positive, cheerfully ironic book is outstandingly well suited to the new image of Russia and to the atmosphere of departure in modern Russian literature." SANDAMMEER
"Sakhnovsky is a worthwhile discovery." GIESSENER ANZEIGER
"Eroticism, which tends to be denigrated in literary circles today as almost an outdated, compulsively repetitious theme, makes an unexpected comeback in Sakhnovsky’s short story collection, “The Happy and the Mad”. The intensity and refinement of treatment, the striking freshness and casualness of the erotic experience, prompt the reader to virtually swallow the book down at a gulp.... SUEDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG

He left his family home at the age of 17 to try his luck as a movie actor in Moscow. After study of classical literature he worked as an editor for a publishing house and began to write lyric poetry. As a complete unknown he sent his novel to Novy Mir who published it immediately. In 2002 he received a Hawthornden Fellowship (UK) for his novel which has been translated into English.
