WHITE HEAT
Book ID/图书代码: 11701209B33571
English Summary/英文概要: It’s dawn on the frozen sea beside Bylot Island, far north of the Arctic Circle. Three travellers and a dog team are hunting duck. Among them is expert Inuit hunter and guide, sassy ex-drunk, Edie Kiglatuk. The two men are southern tourists experiencing Arctic life in the raw while there’s still an Arctic left to experience.
When one of the men is shot dead in mysterious circumstances out on the sea ice, the local Council of Elders in the tiny northern settlement of Autisaq, dependent on the revenue from visiting hunters and naturalists, is keen to cover it up as a hunting accident.
Life returns to normal until two adventurers arrive seeking the remains of a legendary Victorian explorer. Hiring Edie and her beloved stepson Joe as guides the two parties set off in different directions. Four days later, Joe returns alone frostbitten, hypothermic and disoriented and things begin to take a darker turn. When Joe is found dead in an apparent suicide, Edie begins the hunt for explanations.
But not everyone wants the truth to come out. Missing white people are bad for business. Wary of outside influence the people of Autisaq shrug and say Ayaynuaq, it can’t be helped. Ayaynuaq. Let sleeping dogs lie. All her life Edie has been hearing that word but now she’s heard it once too often. Defying the growing mood against her, the accidental detective determines to discover what really happened to her beloved stepson.
WHITE HEAT is an environmental detective adventure story set in a vast world of ice and rock, a world of tracks and never-rotting bones, a world where there is everywhere but nowhere to hide. It’s a world of spirits and ancestors where stories never die and the snow both conceals and exposes the evidence of human misadventure.
But it’s a world that’s fast-changing too. As Russians, Americans, Canadians and Danes battle it out to secure mining and oil prospecting rights in the world’s last unclaimed territory, the Arctic Ocean seabed, the Arctic is fast becoming the scene of the new Cold War.

Praise for THE LONG EXILE:
“McGrath has accomplished significant and riveting work in her investigation into the Canadian relocation of several Inuit families to Ellesmere Island in the 1950s. By focusing primarily on one family, she humanizes what has been called one of the worst human rights violations in Canadian history.”---Booklist, Starred Review
“This is a story of official wrong-headedness and arrogance and McGrath relays it with compassion...gripping.”---Guardian
Top of Form 1
“Melanie McGrath is a gifted, passionate and sensitive story-teller...Fresh, illuminating and heartbreaking history.”---Sunday Telegraph
“Poignant and humane book...an impressively researched and often poetic story.”---Observer
“...lyrical and beautiful as the stark nature it describes...more than a fascinating and instructive read...a joyful one.”---Evening Standard
“...I defy anybody not to find her book one of the most seductive reads of the decade.”---Daily Telegraph
