»Admiration is all well and good,« says the wife of the narrator in Armin Thurnher’s novel, »but is it really necessary to take it as far as obsession?« Der Übergänger is about the narrator’s veneration for the famous pianist Alfred Brendel. This adulation is the reason why, for a long time, he doesn’t have the courage to ask him for an interview; and when he finally does summon the courage, his request is refused. However, he still sends Brendel an article he wrote about him, and as a result the pianist agrees to meet him. But somehow all the plans fall through. When the narrator hears of Brendel’s intention to stop giving concerts and withdraw from public life entirely, he decides that it’s now or never and he has to make one final attempt to meet his idol.

鋼琴家，1931年1月5日出生於摩拉維亞北方的威森堡（現屬捷克共和國），六歲在扎格雷跟隨德澤利克（Sofia Dezelic）學習鋼琴，接著又在格拉茨音樂院師從卡恩（Ludovika von Kaan）、私下拜師米赫爾（Artur Michl）學習作曲，並在大師班跟隨費雪（Edwin Fischer）、包加特納（Paul Baumgartner）與史都爾曼（Eduard Steuermann）學習，1948年第一次在格拉茨登台演出，1949年在布梭尼國際鋼琴大賽中獲獎。得獎後的布蘭德爾開始在歐洲各地巡迴演出，1958年首次在倫敦登台。從1960年到1963年，布蘭德爾首度錄下貝多芬三十二首鋼琴奏鳴曲，1973年第一次在卡內基音樂廳演出。布蘭德爾從1970年起定居倫敦，巡迴演出的範圍也擴及到全世界。
這是一本小說，故事訴說一名記者，懷著對於布蘭德爾的熱愛，癡迷於音樂的魅力而欲罷不能。他曾多次嘗試接近心中的偶像，但屢屢卻始終未能如願。
可是，崇拜與欣賞故然無可厚非，但身陷其中而幾近癡迷，這究竟是否可取？
這本小說圍繞著故事主人對於鋼琴大師布蘭德爾的摯愛與崇拜而展開。出於熱切的仰慕之情，使得故事主人在相當長的一段時間內甚至沒有勇氣去採訪自己心中的偶像，但當他終於鼓足勇氣提出邀請時，不料對方卻予以拒絕。
可是，他仍選擇將自己撰寫的文章寄給了布蘭德爾，那是一篇有關於後者的報導，隨後這位元鋼琴大師終於同意他的會面請求。但就在夙願得償的前一刻，一夜間原本所有的計畫卻最終功虧一簣，他獲悉道，布蘭德爾正在考慮徹底淡出公眾的視線，並自從不再舉辦任何演奏會，於是他決心一定要見到自己心中的偶像，第一次，也是最後一次…(AW & CL)

About the Author/作者介绍： Armin Thurnher born in 1949 in Bregenz, Austria, is co-founder, co-owner and editor-in-chief of Falter, Vienna’s weekly magazine. He has been awarded numerous prizes including the Bruno Kreisky Prize and the Kurt Vorhofer Prize. His most recent publications with Zsolnay are Das Trauma, ein Leben. Österreichische Einzelheiten (1999) and Heimniederlage.
