ENDLESS CONSCIOUSNESS: A SCIENTIFIC VISION ON THE NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE

In 2001 the Dutch cardiologist Pim van Lommel published in the reputable medical journal The Lancet about his study of dear-death experiences (nde’s) among 344 patients in the Netherlands who had suffered a cardiac arrest in hospital. 62 of these patients turned out to have had an nde. Van Lommel’s article was a worldwide hit.

From that moment the phenomenon of Near-Death Experience could no longer be ignored. It is an authentic experience, which cannot be reduced to fantasy, psychosis or a deficiency of oxygen; people are permanently changed by an nde. In Endless Consciousness Van Lommel explains step by step how people who are clinically dead can have such an impressive experience. He illustrates his argument with stories of people who have gone through an nde and with most of whom he is personally acquainted. In van Lommel’s opinion the current materialistic view of the relation between the brain and consciousness, as held by most physicians, philosophers and psychologists, is too restricted for a proper understanding of this phenomenon. There are good reasons to assume that our consciousness does no always coincide with the functioning of our brain: consciousness can also be experienced apart from the body.

The NDE is an authentic experience which cannot be attributed to imagination, psychosis or oxygen deprivation. After such an profound experience, patient’s personalities underwent a permanent change. In Van Lommel’s opinion, the current views on the relationship between the brain and consciousness held by most physicians, philosophers and psychologists is too narrow for a proper understanding of the NDE phenomenon. The author provides examples and ways that our consciousness does not always coincide with brain functions; that consciousness can even be experienced separate from the body.

Chinese Summary/

(VL)
