STEALING MAGIC
Book ID/图书代码: 02330010B34759
English Summary/英文概要: Waking from a nightmare she has after the opening of Mr. Bell’s photography exhibit, Ruthie Stewart worries that she and her best friend Jack Tucker may have made a serious mistake by leaving a note with their names on it in the Japanese room, number 31. Retrieving the letter, they discover that someone – and it could be anyone – has written a response at the bottom. Now, the two of them worry that they’ve put the magic of the rooms in jeopardy, and wonder if they’ll ever be able to figure out who it is that knows their fabulous secret. They also begin to notice that a few objects – a globe, a ship model - appear to be missing from the rooms.
Ruthie, meanwhile, has started drawing lessons, and the subject she and her teacher practice on is the Thorne Rooms. Ruthie hopes the extra time in the exhibit, along with her newly developing skills of observation will help her notice if there are any other clues the mystery responder may have left.
By chance, Ruthie and Jack visit another one of the rooms, a room from Paris just before World War Two. Walking out onto the streets of Paris, they meet Louisa, a Jewish girl whose family has already been forced to leave Germany. When Ruthie learns from her father that Paris was also not safe for Jews during the war, she knows that they must warn her. But just when they need it most, Christina of Milan’s magic key goes missing, and they face the real possibility that they may not be able to save this young girls life. The key has been stolen, for sure, and they must find it again.
As the story unfolds, Ruthie learns about trust and betrayal. And finally, they discover that another object – something that has been right under Ruthie’s nose - provides the magic they need to complete their mission to save Louisa and uncover the key’s thief; an object that belonged to another young girl who led a different life entirely and whose secrets will be explained in book three, Questions Answered in the Sixty-Eight Rooms.
