NOISE: A NOVEL

Book ID/图书代码: 01240010B34853

English Summary/英文概要: For readers of dystopian societies comes Darin Bradley’s debut novel NOISE, a modern-day Lord of the Flies.

Hiram is not his real name--it is the mask he puts on so that he can do what needs to be done. For Hiram knows the truth: that the end of society is nigh. For the airwaves freed by television’s change to digital have been usurped by Salvage--a group of video pirates whose collective knowledge produces The Book: a plan to get Hiram and his friend Levi safely through the chaos that is about to turn neighbor upon neighbor; that is going to see the rule of law ended, and the rise of autonomous clans. Dark and haunting, this debut novel introduces a brilliant new voice in Darin Bradley, and a story sure to resonate for years to come.

Society is constantly balanced on a thin line between community and anarchy--and those who are prepared will have the best chance to survive. Hiram and Levi know this, as they are followers of Salvage--the pirated signals broadcast over television airwaves no longer in use after the changeover to digital. The various messages culled from Salvage paint a horrifying picture: one in which economic collapse--and the fall of organized civilization--is imminent. Put together in The Book, these lessons lay out a plan for gathering supplies, escaping the urban breakdown, and establishing a new order at The Place: Amaranth, where life can start once again.

Having gathered supplies, trained for the inevitable violence, and psychologically prepared for the decisions they would face, Hiram and Levy are confident they can weather the oncoming storm. But when abstractions are turned into reality--when it’s kill-or-be-killed--can a manual of hacker philosophy really sustain these friend’s attempts to free themselves from the shackles of society?

NOISE is a stark and, yet, at times movingly lyrical novel, in which the choices we make--before, during, and after a crisis—define the kind of world that will rise from the ashes.

Review "Story edged as a katana, prose tight as the grip that wields it, Noise is keen in its purpose and most ‘incisive.’ Shorn of false sentiment and trite cynicism, it paints an all too plausible apocalypse, and paints it in bold fresh terms. This is a great new take on its genre and an exemplary work in its own right."---Hal Duncan, author of Ink and Vellum

"Darin Bradley’s brainy, slippery, and riveting Noise is Lord of the Flies on serious psychotropics. With narrative tendrils in the "paper" book and online as well, Noise is deliberately speaking to a young, media-soaked audience through various texts and tricks. You watch. Noise is destined to be a milestone work for Millennial readers."---Barth Anderson, author of The Patron Saint of Plagues

"Noise is not a thick book, so the dense layering and compelling characterizations will surprise you all the more. It’s unexpected. And given Bradley’s dark view and haunting prose, it’s even possible you won’t like Noise. But it is not possible that you will forget it."---January Magazine

"You want this book...It’s the kind of book that leaves you breathless haunted and in awe. It makes me think of Little Brother meets Lord of the Flies meets Heart of Darkness meets Mad Max and the Road Warrior meets Letham. It’s a ride, fast and sure, and even though it seems like a YA dystopian novel, like another Hunger Games or...Battle Royale, he takes it and makes it so unique, so different, so blood curdling awesome. And he does that one thing all real interesting and smart genre writers try to do and fail miserably over and over and over again--he combines literary feats of philosophical inquiry and metafictional prowess with the steady rhythm and accessibility of a powerful fast read of a gut punch of a novel. In other words--you want this book."---Paul Jessup
