The last thing he sees as he collapses is the blade in his chest. Yet a fraction of a second later, he finds himself standing over his own body, a bloodstained knife in his hand. His own inert body lies sprawled at his feet.
Vertumne is horrified to realise that he has somehow been reincarnated as his own killer. He must now live the life of Donovan Dubois, a grubby, uneducated, work-shy young thug, and now a murderer. He discovers his new family: a girlfriend who is too good for him, an older brother who tries to keep him on the straight and narrow, and a father on his deathbed. His only friends are a mob of thugs just like himself. Vertumne-Dubois is at once fascinated, terrified, and disgusted by this new life. But he has little time to settle into it; convinced the police are on his trail, he goes on the run.
This marks the beginning of a new life, in which he strives to find an explanation for what has happened. Having tried and failed to write a novel, he seeks refuge in violence, and struggles with the temptation to take his own life as he questions the significance of his own former existence. He seeks solace in the arms of Poppée, a Latin teacher and alcoholic nymphomaniac, until she cuts him loose. He finds himself helplessly swept along by events once more, until he encounters a figure from his own past: an evil shaman that he will have to kill – in order to die.
