Can we forsake the dreams of our youth? Above all, how is such a renunciation possible? Milan Dargent’s method provides an answer: we must try to “picture ourselves twenty years before, and think of what we’ve now become”. And evoke ghosts from the past, whoever they are: childhood friends, singers, actors, even pets… They all contributed in making him what he is today: Youki ,the dog; Bill, the goldfish; Théodore, the black friend; Bertrand, his childhood buddy along with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Lou Reed or Arthur Rimbaud. "When you look back on your life and make what can only be called an assessment, you will notice that a lot of things have remained obscure, deep-down inside you", explains the author. He revived his memories in twenty-five short tales, a gallery of an equal number of characters who are brought (back) to life thanks to his vivid writing style imbued with lightness, modesty and, in particular, a scathing sense of humour. Milan Dargent goes back in time with deeply moving tenderness: he confers philosophical questions about our future with a dimension, which is less nostalgic than we would like to think. For it is the human being – much more than time – that he questions. His stroll down memory lane is as rock’n’roll and batty as his previous Soupe à la tête de bouc and also as biting as a good crack up with the mates. A true breath of fresh air. Let’s hope Milan Dargent doesn’t wait another eight before gratifying us with a new novel. ---Faustine Amoré, evene.fr, 27 January 2010 (www.evene.fr/livres/livre/milan-dargent-le-club-des-cameleons-42336.php)
It is so well written the reader catches himself smiling, then feeling moved.---E. D, 日內瓦論譠報La Tribune de Genève, 23-24 January 2010
Le Club des caméléons is an engaging and amusing little book, a glimpse into troubled lives, in which trials and tribulations are examined with benevolent irony.---Thierry Meissirel, 進步報Le Progrès, 13 January 2010
Here is a collection of short texts to be quietly savoured at any time, in any position, on an empty stomach or a full one, and in any mood.---Jacques Griffault, Le Choix des libraires, 7 February 2010
On the credit list of his teenage years, Milan Dargent mentions his consecutive heroes, Josh Randall, the sheriff with a sawn-off shotgun, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Eddy Merckx. Then come Che Guevara, Rimbaud, and David Bowie, very quickly overshadowed by Lou Reed. He replays the tape backwards, in spurts, in short, piercing, funny, slightly disenchanted chapters. And it’s fantastic.---Michel Genson, Le Républicain lorrain, 2 February 2010
Le Club des caméléons is a gallery of short texts, which do not include the Stones this time but which cover David Bowie and Lou Reed. They also depict his dog Youki, his mate Fred, and the junkie Roger. We even encounter Isidore Ducasse in these nostalgic, cheerful and flippant tales.---Michel Audétat, L’Hebdo, 28 January 2010
