THE UNWRITTEN LAWS OF FINANCE AND INVESTMENT
Book ID/图书代码: 00200010B35514
English Summary/英文概要: The Unwritten Laws of Finance and Investment is written as a primer for the uninitiated and a refresher course for those with experience. It is split into six sections, adopting a structure designed to move readers from the introductory basics to guidance for those who wish to operate at higher levels.
The first three sections – ‘Grandmother’s Wisdom’, ‘Laws for the Innocent’ and ‘Laws for the Cautious’ – give guidance at its broadest and most approachable. As the book unfolds, through sections entitled ‘Investment Laws’, ‘Laws of Finance’ and ‘Axioms of Experience’, more detailed and sophisticated principles come into view. Some of the maxims covered in the early stages will be revisited, expanded, finessed and/or given wider contextual relevance.
‘Grandmother’s Wisdom’ contains the easy-tooverlook simple truths. Familiarity need not breed contempt for the ageless classics, handed down from generation to generation. Section Two, ‘Laws for the Innocent’, contains principles that newcomers to the world of finance and investment must learn to understand (and that experienced investors should learn to remember). The third section is dedicated to risk, to the care that all investors must take to protect and enhance their financial security.
The ‘Laws’ included in the fourth section focus on markets and the nature of investment. It will help readers to develop better comprehension of the way markets work (and how they sometimes do not work), as well as giving insights into the way investments are valued. Section Five, ‘Laws of Finance’, explores the principles of finance. It is designed to improve practical proficiency and raise confidence by outlining the nature of what lies beneath the surface. In ‘Axioms of Experience’, the last section, the focus swings back to the immediate concerns of investors and reverts to the proverbial tone set in the first section. With knowledge and application results improve. There is, this section emphasises, no substitute for experience. There is a conceit at the heart of this book.
Although it is called The Unwritten Laws of Finance and Investment, these laws are of course being written down here. And, in truth, many of them have appeared elsewhere, in some shape or form, so I owe a deep debt to all those who preceded me in endeavours to explain and codify the webs of laws, rules of thumb, tips and facts of financial life. But while many of the laws may be written elsewhere, most need explanation. My ambition is to put the eternal wisdom of finance and investment together in one helpful volume.
While most financial and investment advice focuses on recent trends, or encourages consumers to buy a favoured product, this book breaks the mould, offering eternal wisdom that draws on years of expensive failures and enviable successes. Following on from the success of James Skakoon’s The Unwritten Laws of Business (25,000 copies sold to date), this approachable but thoughtful gem brings together these useful lessons for the first time. Covering everything from reminders of the simplest of truths - ’Patience is a virtue’ and ’Better safe than sorry’ - to the more troublesome - ’Inflation is the stealthiest of enemies’ and ’Guarantees are rarely guaranteed’ - each law is presented in an accessible, easily digestible manner, and illustrated with examples. This is essential reading for savers and investors, novices and old hands - and these laws are applicable all around the world.
Making money – and avoiding losses – is far easier for those who use the lessons of the past, the ‘unwritten’ laws that have stood the test of time. Most financial and investment advice focuses on recent trends, or encourages consumers to buy a favoured product, but this book breaks the mould, offering eternal wisdom that draws on years of expensive failures and enviable successes. Following on from the success of James Skakoon’s The Unwritten Laws of Business, this thoughtful gem brings together these timeless truths for the first time. Covering everything from the simplest of rules (‘Better safe than sorry’) to the more troublesome (‘Guarantees are rarely guaranteed’), each law is presented in an easily digestible manner, and illustrated with examples. Insightful, engaging and refreshingly free of financial jargon, this is essential reading for savers and investors, novices and old hands, all around the world – and will pay for itself many times over.
