THE GHOST OF GREENWICH VILLAGE

Eve Weldon is a young woman who moves to New York City from Ohio looking for a career and romance, of course. Lorna has dreamed of living in the Village, the enchanting world of which her mother spoke so longingly, the bohemian beat Village of the 50’s. But instead of a new community, her only company is the ghost of a beat writer – Donald Bellows. Donald is determined to finish the story collection he’s convinced would have made him famous, had he not died suddenly and decades ago in Eve’s walk-up apartment. Since he cannot leave, he persuades Eve to take down his esoteric writing in dictation. Eve is the first apartment tenant open enough to let Donald into her life and she has a soft spot for him, despite his cantankerousness and outlandish philosophies.
Eve becomes a writer too, of sorts, ghost writing the intros and patter of the anchors at Smell the Coffee, a top morning news show. She even gets a glimpse at the glamorous New York life she dreamed of after Matthias Klieg, a high-profile fashion designer she interviews, sends her one of his expensive designs to wear to a gala in his honor. Then when an encounter with the city’s most-wanted criminal puts her in the media spotlight, she uses the opportunity to stand up for herself and her fellow unacknowledged, hardworking writers. But in finding her voice, she may lose her job, her apartment, and with it, Donald, the closest thing to family she’s had since she was a child. The competitive backbiting environment of the network is a far cry from the congenial comradery of the Village art groups and the largesse of stores who supported them in her mother’s day. It seems that world she sought has disappeared, or has it? When Eve is fired, she finds the gumption to stay in the city, enabling her to help Donald, solve a mystery regarding Matthias, discover the source of her mother’s sadness, and make a name and a community for herself in the process.

“The Ghost of Greenwich Village is a beautifully written love story. It’s a tribute to people and places, past and present, real and imagined. But it’s also a fascinating peek inside the world of morning news, and a fast-paced adventure of a single girl in New York City (complete with fabulous closet). While reading it, I wanted to bury myself in a really comfy chair and silence the phone so no one could disturb me until I’d devoured the last page.”---Paulina Porizkova, author of A Model Summer
