CORONA DE FLORES (THE WREATH OF FLOWERS)
Book ID/图书代码: 08443010B36023
English Summary/英文概要: Corona de flores (The Wreath of Flowers). Barcelona, 1877. The city shudders under a cloud of chemical smoke and trembles beneath the menace of the Killer of Esperanza. Semproni de Paula, the diminutive, paranoid and violent inspector, and Menelaus Roca, an agoraphobic and photophobic anatomist with a past as a homicidal maniac, are charged with unravelling the mystery of the wave of murders. Around them roam a cohort of secondary characters, all darkly interconnected by webs of intrigue and treachery: Aniol Almarossa, the city’s latest literary star, engaged in a war against morals, author of a pamphlet preaching decadentism which has been adopted by the city’s youth; Max Téller, the absurdly superstitious transvestite underworld king, always accompanied by his sinister little monkey; Dado Blokium, an erudite and pompous diplomat; and Liberata, Menelaus Roca’s mute maid, embroiled in an unhealthy relationship with her boss while holding the key to a far-reaching mystery. From the underworld to palace salons, from the city’s sick underbelly to the heights of observatories which look out on to a changing sky, this is an esoteric and hypnotic horror story, a crime novel set in XIX century Barcelona.
