Ian has run away from home and he convinces Lucy to drive him across the country, away from the overbearing, evangelical mother who Lucy dislikes for having enrolled him in weekly anti-gay classes. While on the road Lucy struggles to make peace with her Russian immigrant father and his fugitive past, and to make some sense of why she was so willing to abandon her own life. She hopes to undo some of Ian’s brainwashing by the creepy celebrity pastor who’s been his mentor - but time is running out, and they are being followed.
The question Lucy must face in the end is whether her impulse to save a child from his own parents has done more harm than good.
