English Summary/英文概要： When Laura wins a trip for two to the Caribbean after buying a raffle ticket from a mysterious woman, her uncle agrees somewhat reluctantly to take up the prize. He isn’t a fan of cruise ships, the sun or any other aspect of a Caribbean holiday. Laura, by contrast, can hardly contain her excitement, especially since it turns out that her best friend, Tariq, is able to join them. The only downside is that her three-legged husky, Skye, is not allowed to come. However, on the day they set sail from Falmouth, Cornwall, Skye jumps on board and ends up on the ship.
Almost immediately things start to go wrong. Laura’s uncle, Calvin Redfern, falls down some stairs on his way to his cabin and strains his ankle very badly and is laid up for most of the voyage. When he starts to recover, he suddenly becomes very sleepy and suspects he has a virus. It’s several days before they discover that the pain medication he has been taking for his ankle is actually a sleeping draught.
In spite of this, Laura and Tariq have a great time on board. Every evening at dinner, they make up a different story about their circumstances to tell various dinner companions – one night claiming they’re actors on their way to a film set, another claiming they’re rich children returning from boarding school, and on another saying they’re orphans on their way to be adopted by an unknown family.
At night, they befriend a ship’s mate who loves dogs and allows them to exercise Skye on deck. Some nights, he even exercises the husky for them.
As they near Antigua, a pirate ship used to entertain tourists sails out to greet them. While Laura and Tariq are on deck watching the spectacle, Calvin Redfern disappears without a trace. When they go down to his cabin, it has been perfectly cleaned, as if no one has ever stayed there.
Frantic, they run for help. The only problem is, no one believes that Calvin Redfern has ever been on board. Mysteriously, there is no record of him, nor is there any record of a competition. To make matters worse, various passengers come forward to say that Laura and Tariq made up wild stories about their backgrounds but on no occasion mentioned an uncle.
They dock at Antiqua that night, but Laura and Tariq are not allowed to leave the ship until the police arrive to question them the next morning. In the meanwhile, they’re locked in their cabin. There they find a Joker playing card, the calling card of the Straight A gang, the international crime syndicate who have vowed to avenge Calvin Redfern’s capture of several key members. They immediately realize that Laura’s uncle has been kidnapped.
During the night, they escape from their cabin and from the ship. Once on Antiqua, they find their way to the hotel where they supposedly had free accommodation as part of their prize. The rooms are in fact available and, by making up a series of stories about their uncle’s whereabouts, they have an initial base for their investigations. Those investigations lead them to the island of Monserrat, all but deserted since it erupted several years ago.
On Monserrat’s post-apocalyptic landscape, they start to look in to the operations of a shady company called Marine Concern, which is supposedly an eco company researching rare sea life. In fact, it’s a cover for a billion dollar trade in rare marine life such as sea horses. Thousands of miles from home, Laura and Tariq face a race against time to find Calvin Redfern and stop Marine Concern’s most deadly operation – all before the volcano erupts and destroys the island once again.
