LIVING WITH DRUGS (SIXTH EDITION)
A study of drugs - the different kinds of drugs, the reasons why people take drugs, the ways in which people have used drugs, and some of the difficulties to which drug-taking can lead. The various hazards of use discussed include the physical and psychological health of users, the social penalties incurred by use of abuse, and the risk of dependence. In addition, the effects of drugs may be directly linked to the drug effect or indirectly related to behavioural patterns of use or to social consequences of use.
The book is also about the ordinariness of drug taking. Where drugs are presented as though they were something alien and unusually dangerous, it tries to put drug-taking in a more balanced perspective, showing that even those who drink tea or coffee are drug takers. There are updated definitions of the main terms used within the fields of drugs and alcohol.
Chinese Summary/
(AW & SK)

‘This sixth edition covers popular drugs in a clear and demystifying language…working within the drug field it is one that I would insist on having in the drug service: all staff working with drug users would find this book useful…the rituals of drug use are discussed, a topic that will be of great use to workers in the drug field who are looking at relapse prevention and are trying to deepen their understanding of why people continue to use illicit substances…well written, informative…highly recommended.’---Community Care
‘This is an intriguing and fascinating book that will provide the reader with a better knowledge of substance abuse.’---Professional Social Work

’The book is written in an easily accessible style… suitable for a general readership. I highly recommend it’ ---Health Sociology Review
’The fact that Living with Drugs is into its sixth edition indicates its value. The book provides an accessible and thorough examination from multiple perspectives of both complexities of drugs and drug use…aimed at both generalist and and specialist reader.’---Drug and Alcohol Review
’It is well constructed, easy to grasp for readers from a range of disciplines, but moreover covers a lot of ground from beginning to end, each chapter capable of standing alone as an essay yet in this case, seamlessly fused. The author is not
overtly conjectural or condescending, sticking to accessible points of fact and little superfluous material. All in all, a highly creditable read.’---Critical Public Health
