To remember, that is, when he began kidnapping, raping, torturing and killing women. To remember how he became a monster. To remember the summer when Thomas’ brother disappeared.
This uncompromising psychological novel vacillates between idealized nostalgia (the taste of orange sherbet, imaginary friends) and the overwhelming feeling of hatred at the realization that nothing is permanent, that a mother can also be a prostitute. Thomas tells the story of his life through his own symbols and fantasies, such as the Ice King, the symbol of suffering and miscomprehension, who tarnishes all that shines, makes children grow up and turns women into seductresses.
Thomas, sequestered and forced to relive the painful events of his childhood, will refuse to reveal the truth about that summer to Madame Crab…but the reader will nonetheless witness the shocking reality through Thomas’ eyes.
