THE HURT IMAGINATION
Book ID/图书代码: 03635010B36790
English Summary/英文概要: In 1981 I had a breakdown, for which I sought help from a psychoanalyst. Psychoanalysis sent me on an emotional journey so painful and disorienting that eventually I needed institutional care. I spent three years in psychiatric institutions, as an inpatient and a day-patient. Here I found myself embroiled in the biggest shake-up of mental health care since the mid-nineteenth century. In Britain, as in most western nations, the mentally ill were moving from the asylum into the community, as part of a process designed to transform them from modern-day lepers into health consumers, picking and choosing from an array of ‘wellbeing services’. The ‘dependency culture’ was pronounced dead, along with the stigmatised figure of the asylum inmate. The lunatic, that age-old emblem of human frailty, was swept away by a new age of ‘normalisation’ and ‘social inclusion’.
