THIS BORROWED EARTH: LESSONS FROM THE FIFTEEN WORST ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS AROUND THE WORLD

Book ID/图书代码: 07816010B36957

English Summary/英文概要: THIS BORROWED EARTH by Robert Emmet Hernan, consists of 15 stories of famous environmental disasters which occurred throughout the world, during the 20th century, and from which we must learn if we are to sustain the planet for further centuries to come. The Preface has been written by Bill McKibben, Environmentalist, Educator and Author of "The End of Nature", McMillan Press 2007.
Timely with today’s disaster in the Gulf of Mexico’s oil spill, these disasters are written as the events unfold and they describe what happened to the people who were experiencing them at that time. The reader is transported back to that period of time and place. These are extremely readable and often very shocking and sad. They include The Great Smog in 1952 in London, Three Mile Island, Bhopal, Chernobyl, Exon Valdes Oil spill, the Brazilian Rainforest etc. all of which have helped to create the global warming situation of today.

’...His style is readable and persuasive, his points not to be ignored.’---The Good Book Guide (“他的风格很有可读性,并且说服力很强,应该受到重视。”---《好书指导》)

’This Borrowed Earth: Lessons from Fifteen Environmental Disasters Around the World, powerfully depicts in simple, transparent prose, the lasting and wrenching impact of some of the major environmental disasters of the last century, which younger generations may only barely remember. But Mr. Hernan’s book does much more. It reveals a striking similarity in the genesis of these disasters that can shed light on ways to prevent them in the future – in particular, the profit-driven development of production technologies with no heed to their health and environmental effects or the environmental fate of their products. One is convinced, after reading Mr. Hernan’s book, that the only way to slow the rate of growth of devastating climate change is for governments around the world to assert control over our most basic technology – the production of energy in ways that can lift the world out of poverty without destroying it in the process.’---Barry Commoner, American biologist (“《借来的地球》讲了全世界15个环境大灾难的经验教训,有力描述了上世纪一些主要环境问题的影响以及年轻一代无从得知的史实,言语简练,通俗易懂。不仅如此,作者赫南还指出了这些灾难的共性,以找出将来阻止他们的方式,尤其是生产技术的发展对人类自身健康和环境的影响以及产物的命运。读完此书,人们会信服,对世界和政府来说只有一条缓解气候变化的方法以确保掌控我们最最基础的技术,能够带我们脱离贫困又不会破坏环境的能量发展方式。”---巴瑞•考莫纳(Barry Commoner),美国生物学家)
