English Summary/英文概要： Patterns are all around us, and our brains appear to be wired to notice them. We see patterns wherever we look – in the arrangement of leaves on a plant, the windblown ridges on a bank of sand or snow, the concentric ripples on a pond or the markings on a zebra’s skin. We make sense of the world by reading patterns within it: when measuring and counting we find patterns again in the data we amass. The pleasure we take in the visual arts derives in large part from our perception of patterns in colour and form. In mathematics people find intriguing patterns in numbers and fascinating problems such as tessellation – covering a flat space with figures such as triangles or hexagons – or domino puzzles.
