Jan’s mother never got over her loss and six years later killed herself. During those years, she had blamed Jan for Sven’s abduction, because for the sake of some childish prank he had taken his brother to the park. Since then Jan has been tortured by guilt and constantly searching for answers. He chose to become a psychiatrist like his father. While working with sexual offenders, he tries to understand what is going on in their minds.
Now, however, Jan feels burned out and is undergoing a major crisis. His marriage broke down, and after suffering a nervous breakdown and hitting a patient, he also lost his job. His career seems to have reached its end. But then Professor Dr. Raimund Fleischer offers him a chance to get his professional life back on track. Fleischer was a friend of Jan’s father and is head of “Waldklinik“, a psychiatric hospital in Jan’s home city of Fahlenberg. Fleischer asks just one condition of Jan in return for the job offer: Jan has to submit to therapy with Dr. Norbert Rauh. Rauh also works at “Waldklinik”; with his hypnotic therapy he hopes to help Jan to come to terms with his past. Jan agrees. For the time being he moves in with his old friend Rudolf Marenburg.
A few days later Jan is a witness to a mysterious suicide. The dead woman shows a striking resemblance with the daughter of his friend Marenburg. Just days before Sven’s disappearance, Alexandra Marenburg had also taken her own life under suspicious circumstances. Neither Rudolf Marenburg nor Jan believe it to be a coincidence – even less so after they make the acquaintance of journalist Carla Weller. Carla was a close friend of the dead woman and she does not believe it to be a suicide either.When even more people die, Jan and Carla find a connection that leads them to Waldklinik. Their research becomes increasingly dangerous – and it is their lives that are at stake! After Carla and Rudolf Marenburg have almost died at the hands of murderers, Jan discovers a connection with Norbert Rauh. Is the hypnotic therapist the master mind behind the murders? Could it be he even knows something about Sven?
