A SEA IN FLAMES: THE DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL BLOWOUT (OLD TITLE: BLOWOUT)
Book ID/图书代码: 06840010B38040
English Summary/英文概要: In a book about the BP disaster that only the multiple award winning MacArthur Genius Grant Winner and head of the Blue Ocean Institute could write, Carl Safina’s BLOWOUT provides us with the definitive book about the short- and long-term repercussions of this century’s Chernobyl. The Gulf of Mexico oil blowout is, in many ways, the greatest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history. In this account of the first months of the BP oil spill, Safina discusses the events that caused the explosion, the habitats affected by the spill, the wildlife directly harmed, the deregulatory mood of the U.S. that has turned the government from protector of public interest to protector of corporate greed, the government closures of fisheries, the obstruction of public access, the staggering economic and social losses, and what must be learned to prevent an oil spill like this from happening again.
Safina weaves unfolding news accounts with the events he experienced firsthand, creating a simulacrum of the chaos accompanying big oil’s Chernobyl. His narration conveys the stunned reactions, the confusion, the anger, the hypocrisy, and the grief the catastrophic spill has garnered. BLOWOUT is a medium through which to better understand the BP oil spill, why it occurred, and what will come after.

Overview
The Gulf of Mexico oil blowout is, in many ways, the greatest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history.
What I’d like to accomplish with this book is to produce a quick, rather brief account of the first months of the oil blowout. This would aim to be the most readable early account, in perhaps 150 book pages. A definitive text will have to wait for the science and sociology to look back on years of aftermath.
There will be numerous books on this event. I’m guessing most will seek to delve deep into BP and the Obama administration. They will see this as a political news story. I would seek to carve a separate niche. I see this as several things that are different. One, I have an eye and an orientation toward the natural system and wildlife that is unusual among the people covering this story as news. Two, I would weave in accounts of several people whose lives will be changing in coming months. Three, I would focus on context; this is a colossal failure of preparedness.
“Written in a clear, conversational style...Readers will find the book
accessible and agreeable...An insightful work.” --The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice
