“Dirt Road Home” follows the fortunes of 14-year-old Hal Mitchell, who briefly ran with Moon in the earlier novel. Petty thievery lands him in the dreaded Hellenweiler Boys Home (Is this a play on Tutwiler?), where almost everybody is divided between rival gangs — the Hounds and the Ministers. Hal is determined to stay out of trouble, however, and does everything in his power to steer a neutral course until his lawyer can convince the judge that he doesn’t belong there.
Unfortunately for Hal, the men running the institution are of no help. Guards turn a blind eye or disappear at inopportune moments. When he first arrives, the superintendent, Mr. Fraley, puts the situation in stark terms. “You see,” Fraley explains, “they tell me to educate the boys. To reform them. But this is just political talk to our fine citizens. Feel-good talk, if you will. In reality, this place is a sort of human landfill that you hide on the outside of town. It’s nothing more than a kennel for dogs that have no hope of being chained. This may sound harsh, but it is simply a reality that you must learn to face. The sooner, the better.”
During his first days inside, Hal is given a brief grace period to choose which gang he will join. Staying neutral is not an option. Survival is virtually impossible without allies. The only neutral figure in the facility, a brooding giant called Caboose, is an enigma who doesn’t speak to anyone and hugs his own section of fence all day.
Surrounded by meanness and violence, frustrated at having to choose one side or the other, Hal curses the aridity and futility of his situation, “the biggest waste of anger and time and life I could imagine.” But there are others who see a larger picture, equally senseless. Paco, the Mexican leader of the Ministers and something of a prison philosopher, tells Hal who the real enemies are. “You see, it is not the Hounds and the Ministers you should be afraid of. They are simply cowards at their little games. They have no real power. It is the people who make them what they are. It is the adults here. Mr. Fraley and his guards.”
“Dirt Road Home” is a great read and, lest the foregoing raise fears to the contrary, age-appropriate. But, just like “Alabama Moon,” it should also appeal to adults. Overall, it’s resounding proof that Watt Key is no one-hit wonder.
