Marion, the narrator of Jean-Philippe Mégnin’s story, embarks on the great adventure alone. Aged 25, this woman from Annecy, fulfils her dream by taking on the little bookshop in Chamonix. A part of France she has loved ever since she spent her childhood holidays there. It’s there, in Chamonix, that she later meets Pierre. A local lad, a “surprising, slightly offbeat” guy who used to run off to join the shepherds in the mountain pastures as of the age of fourteen. A mountain guide whose bag always contained – in addition to his ice axe – a sweater, dried fruits and all he needed to make tea, Pierre radiated a mix of strength and gentleness. After his first visit to the shop, he started coming to see her frequently “between two errands, or when the weather was rotten”, to rummage through the contemporaries, the classics, the essays.
Marion actually ends up marrying Pierre, “one lovely June morning, under Mount Brévant crowned by a blue sky, still dressed in its finest winter névés”.
Before that, the bloke had taken great pains to introduce her to and share his passion with her. Pierre had taken her to refuges and shepherds’ huts, led her across valleys, taught her to descend slightly steep slopes, filled her eyes with magnificent landscapes as he taught her to climb “like a cat”…
