AFTERTASTE: A NOVEL IN FIVE COURSES
Book ID/图书代码: 14780010B38587
English Summary/英文概要: Mira should be on top of the world. In her late thirties, she is the co-owner, with her husband, of one of New York’s most successful restaurants, Grappa; lives in a dream West Village apartment; and has a beautiful baby girl. Instead, Mira, while 7 months pregnant, walks into Grappa’s back room to find an open bottle of the restaurant’s most expensive wine sitting right next to her husband and the hot, young mistress making love. Mira rips chunks of thick locks out of the mistress’s head and leaves the restaurant in handcuffs.
A cascading series of miserable events eventually sends the newly-divorced Mira back to her hometown of Pittsburgh—with baby, and lots of cash from selling Grappa to her ex, in hand.
Mira is unrevived by the gloomy town, but must learn to enjoy something, in order to survive. Slowly and charmingly, she finds reasons to love and be needed again in the world.
What could easily be a traditional and simplistic women’s novel in another author’s hands is instead an insightful and brilliant exploration of what it means to start over. Meredith Cohen is a keen observer of character and Mira is a fiercely nuanced protagonist, one who changes and grows much over the course of the novel, and one whom we intrinsically love, but whose choices we didn’t always agree with upon first meeting her.
Meredith delves into relatable experiences of single motherhood, female friendships, and life transformations deftly and gracefully. Combining a stellar narrative voice with a consistent background of food, both lovingly prepared and lovingly eaten, makes AFTERTASTE a truly salivating debut.

"To say that Aftertaste is a story about food and love and resilience is like calling Anthony Bourdain a "cook." Readers are going to fall in love with Mira and Meredith Mileti."---Jo-Ann Mapson, author of Solomon’s Oak and The Owl & Moon Cafe
"Meredith Mileti’s debut novel serves up a satisfying and delicious story of rebuilding a life after everything is suddenly and cruelly taken away...a keenly observed novel that is, in part, a comedy of manners...There are scores of wonderful scenes of Mira either cooking up a storm or eating her way through Pittsburgh from the perfect biscotti at Bruno’s Bakery, to Italian sausages and cheese from The Pennsylvania Macaroni Factory to oversized sandwiches at Primanti Brothers (it’s enough to make you want to hop on the next plane to Pittsburgh)...Meredith Mileti’s debut novel is as thoughtful and poignant as it is wickedly funny. It is one to savor-recipes included." --- New York Journal of Books
Mileti’s debut will be inspiring to women in all stages of their lives and careers. The sometimes spicy and temperamental main character undergoes great changes that accurately reflect the experiences one has while recovering from major life events. With in-depth descriptions of food and gourmet cooking, not only will this novel make you salivate, but the story itself is startlingly realistic without any of the expected melodrama, making for a moving and unforgettable read.
