THE BLOWOUT EXPERIMENT: TRACKING THE OIL, SCIENCE, AND STORIES OF THE GULF CATASTROPHE

BLOWOUT EXPERIMENT: Tracking the Oil, Science, and Stories of the Gulf Catastrophe, which I’ve just sold to Colin Dickerman at Rodale. The author plans to deliver the complete manuscript in May, 2011. Mark writes regularly for Nature, one of the most respected publications in the world of science. He was the first reporter aboard a research vessel in the spill zone, and the first to take a "Hurricane Hunter" airplane flight around the Gulf as scientists dropped sensors to help figure out where the currents were taking the oil. More recently, he traveled around Louisiana beaches and marshes in his own boat, so that he could leave behind the mad media rush and experience the early effects of oil on shore and meet the people most affected. The more he has learned about the spill, the more he realizes that he has been inadvertently preparing to tell this story his entire life. Before deciding to write full time 12 years ago, he received a master’s degree in chemical oceanography under the guidance of Jeffrey Chanton, a bio-geochemist at Florida State University, who has studied the Gulf’s fossil fuel deposits for nearly two decades. Mark even wrote a paper on methane hydrates, the icy substance that played key roles in causing the spill and causing the first containment effort to fail. Working as an oceanographer for several years, he studied the biology and chemistry of the deep sea on expeditions around the world. He has explored the Gulf of Mexico by ship, small boat, and deep-diving submersible. As part of a volunteer relief team, he was on the coast of the Mississippi just days after Katrina hit, when people were still fighting for ice and food, and the wreckage was bulldozed into piles on the streets. Just five years later, these same areas are facing another monumental cataclysm.

His research into this massive event has only just begun, but he feels the Deepwater Horizon saga is simultaneously the grimmest and most engrossing story of his career. There will be other books on the Deepwater Horizon spill, but he believes that no other writer in the country is as uniquely prepared to take on this challenge as he is. In a sense, he feels duty bound to write this book because if this story isn’t told with full comprehension of the subject and complete accuracy, the full scope of its lessons could be easily lost
