Before deciding to write full time 12 years ago, he received a master’s degree in chemical oceanography under the guidance of Jeffrey Chanton, a bio-geochemist at Florida State University, who has studied the Gulf’s fossil fuel deposits for nearly two decades. Mark even wrote a paper on methane hydrates, the icy substance that played key roles in causing the spill and causing the first containment effort to fail. Working as an oceanographer for several years, he studied the biology and chemistry of the deep sea on expeditions around the world. He has explored the Gulf of Mexico by ship, small boat, and deep-diving submersible. As part of a volunteer relief team, he was on the coast of the Mississippi just days after Katrina hit, when people were still fighting for ice and food, and the wreckage was bulldozed into piles on the streets. Just five years later, these same areas are facing another monumental cataclysm.
