BLACK CHALK

Black Chalk is a compulsively readable literary thriller from newcomer Christopher Yates. In the vein of the Secret History, Yates’ tale of psychological suspense unspools in present day New York and in the venerable halls of Oxford University, where, fifteen years earlier, a group of six friends designed and played a game that would change their lives forever.
All six were smart, brilliant even; their places at the ancient institution won solely by ability. Indeed, it was a point of pride that in a school where both blood and stockings were deepest blue, not one came from families possessed of money, influence, or pedigree. There was Jack, a wiseass whose eviscerating wit would have been insufferable were he not so willing to turn it on himself; lovely Emilia, daughter of a Yorkshire miner whose gentle nature was at odds with her poisonous loathing for Margaret Thatcher; poetry-writing Dee, a.k.a “Havisham” who sported a ragged dyed-black wedding dress and a similarly toned sense of humor; Mark, a physics wiz whose perpetual high and probable narcolepsy rendered him the most laid back of the group; Chad, the painfully shy American, whose desperation to trade in his miserable small-town adolescence was matched only by his gratitude at being accepted into so intimate and dazzling a circle, and finally, at its center, Jolyon; charismatic, self-assured, and accustomed to adoration. Together they were a formidable clique, their determination to define themselves as outsiders—at odds with the “toffs” and scions of privilege who were their classmates—and their confidence in their own cleverness cementing a powerful bond.

Chinese Summary/

(DC)
