WHY BALLOONS RISE AND APPLES FALL: THE LAWS THAT MAKE THE WORLD WORK

We all know the world works in mysterious ways! But have you ever itched to know why? Why don’t heavier things fall faster? Why do we have more energy when we’re sitting upstairs? Is time travel really possible? And what happened to Schrodinger’s poor cat? "Why Balloons Rise and Apples Fall" is an accessible look at the fascinating, awe-inspiring and sometimes downright weird world of physics. It covers all the basics we learnt at school from: what is physics; motion and forces; work and energy; matter and heat; and, electricity and magnetism. It even covers the more thought-provoking and complex questions of relativity, quantum physics and astrophysics, as well as all the exciting philosophical questions that arise out of these subjects.

"At just the right level for the beginner he runs us through all the classical physics that no one bothers with, yet is at the heart of everyday life"---Popularscience.co.uk, Sept 2010

Jeff Stewart has always been fascinated by physics. He specialised in science at school and won a place to study engineering at Cambridge, though he quickly swapped to philosophy when the maths got too hard.
He’s the right person to write about floating balloons, falling apples and the many other wonders of the universe for people who don’t already understand physics because he’s good at explaining difficult concepts using simple, amusing examples.
It helps too that he’s continually amazed by the splendour of the world around us, and excited by the way that strange and brilliant physicists have slowly explained so much of it.
And, maybe most important of all, he isn’t brilliant at maths - so he isn’t going to bombard you with numbers.
