WHAT YOU SEE IN THE DARK: A NOVEL

Although Manuel continues to write about the place where he grew up, California’s Central Valley, What You See in the Dark is a novel in which a few cultural preoccupations that have lent Manuel’s previous work a modernist feel—even when he’s writing about people and places among the last to see signs of progress and change—are the vehicle for an exploration of the interpersonal, which has always been subject number one anyway. One of those preoccupations is the movies, and in What You See in the Dark Hollywood comes to Bakersfield in the form of the unnamed Janet Leigh and Alfred Hitchcock about to begin work on an iconic film that will change things forever. You know it—the one in which a young woman on the run checks into a roadside motel and is brutally murdered in the shower. The actress and director have no idea, though, about the circumstances surrounding the recent murder of another young woman in Bakersfield—an aspiring singer killed in the book’s first chapter—that rival anything the director could ever put on the screen. The reason, Manuel seems to suggest: novels can go where movies cannot. Far from being a retelling of the plot of the Hitchcock film, though, What You See in the Dark explores that particularly American strain of violence, the interior lives of women, the roles we all play in our own stories and in the stories imagined by others, and underneath it all, our love of moviegoing: the act of letting ourselves into the darkness of our imaginations and waiting to see what happens when a story comes to fill that space.

Household Words and Ideas of Heaven的作者Joan Silber如是評價.

What You See in the Dark正是如此。

What You See in the Dark這本小說涉及了文化領域內的一些當務之急,儘管他對人物與地點的描寫不太能讓人感受到進步與改變,但卻著實為其之前的作品增添了些許現代感。 What You See in the Dark中尤其探索了美國人面對暴力的壓力,我們所扮演的自己生活中的角色以及他人想象中的世界…

And here’s a blurb we just received (that will appear on the galleys):
"Manuel Muñoz has written a novel that is gripping to read and illuminating in what it says. What You See in the Dark begins with a sweet romance and a dark surprise, as it traces the winding path of violence in our dreamy American longings. How beautifully the pieces of this book fit together, and how radiantly original it is."-- Joan Silber, author of Household Words and Ideas of Heaven
