THE SPIDER KING’S DAUGHTER
Book ID/图书代码: 04560010B39474
English Summary/英文概要: They say that to eat you must go to school, but no one remembers that to go to school someone else must feed you. And so you take it for granted until one day your someone dies and you have to wear his shoes. I am a hawker now, a mobile shop, an auto convenience store, the boy that stands by the road and sells things.
Seventeen-year-old Abike is the favourite child of Mr Johnson, a rich and corrupt Nigerian businessman. She lives in a sprawling mansion in Lagos, protected by armed guards and ferried everywhere in a huge black jeep by her driver. But neither wealth nor favour grants freedom, and she is often lonely behind the high walls surrounding her house.
A world away from Abike’s mansion, in the slums of Lagos, lives a seventeen-year-old hawker struggling to make sense of the world. His family lost everything after his father’s death and now he runs after cars on the roadside selling ice cream to support his mother and sister.
When Abike buys ice cream from the hawker one day they strike up an unlikely and tentative romance, defying the prejudices of Nigerian society. But as they grow closer, revelations from the past threaten their relationship and both Abike and the hawker must decide where their loyalties lie.
The Spider King’s Daughter is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet with shocking twists, unforgettable characters and a brilliant sense of place.

Turkey-Final ’Even more significant [than Andrew Miller’s novel] is the achievement of poet Matthew Hollis who won the biography award for his subtle and powerful study Now All Roads Lead to France. This is a remarkable book and has been widely acknowledged as such...Hollis brings wonderful empathy and perception to a book which not only examines the evolution of the literary journalist Edward Thomas into a poet, it also brings to life an exciting period of transition in British writing.....Hollis has written a profound book that not only informs and moves, it inspires. ...All five winners will now be considered for the Costa Book of the Year, for which Hollis seems the strongest contender.’---Eileen Battersby
