The House of Hunger is Dambudzo Marechera’s first short novel. Whilst the book made him a spokesperson for the ’lost generation’ struggling for independence in Rhodesia, his work ultimately made him a cult author for the generations to com - not just in Zimbabwe, but also the rest of the world. Marechera’s dense prose has assured him a place in African literature as a stylistic innovator and rebel commentator on the ghetto condition. First published in 1978 in a volume with several short stories, in this edition it is updated with previously unpublished pieces to complete the collection.
With The House of Hunger Marechera became joint winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1979. At the time, Doris Lessing wrote in Books and Bookmen: ’It is no good pretending this book is an easy or pleasant read. More like overhearing a scream.
